Sen Obama supports continued Affirmative Action programs and said:

And I think that for universities and other institutions to say, you know, we’re going to take into account the hardships that somebody has experienced because they’re black or Latino or because they’re women --So I still believe in affirmative action as a means of overcoming both historic and potentially current discrimination . . .

In the 40 years that affirmative action programs have operated, millions of deserving white and Asian students have been passed over at competitive schools across the country in order to admit black and Hispanic students with significantly lower standardized admission test scores (usually 200-350 points lower on a 1600-point scale) and lower high school grades (typically a half point lower on a 4-point scale).
These affirmative action students often struggle to compete in the classroom, and huge numbers of them simply drop out. Instead of helping black and Hispanic students succeed, affirmative action programs mismatch students and institutions.

It is amazing that European Americans have not protested loudly about this type of discrimination. In my long corporate career, I saw plenty of Affirmative Action management employees. I was a front line supervisor working on a PhD in Industrial Psychology and I was managed by Affirmative Action managers with only a high school education and an entitlement attitude. Wonders never cease.

According to the Tyndall Report, a service that monitors the three network news broadcasts, ABC, NBC, and CBS have spent a total of 114 of their national airtime minutes covering Obama since June. They've spent 48 minutes on his Republican rival, Sen. John McCain.
And then you have the almost embarrassing way the media have gushed over Obama's trip to the Middle East. There were 200 requests for the 40 press seats available on Obama's plane, and all three top network anchors (Katie Couric, Charles Gibson and Brian Williams) made the trip and are broadcasting live from each country Obama visits.
You can't buy that kind of publicity. And neither could McCain.
McCain made a trip to the Middle East in March and didn't have to worry about finding seats for any network anchors, because none of them wanted to go.

Sen Obama has been given the gift of a lifetime. He is a "Rock Star" and the "Darling" of the Media. The MSM is not embarrassed with their biased reporting. In fact, they will probably take their Obama bias all the way to the general election.

Military personnel not voting

WASHINGTON, D.C. -- Rep. Roy Blunt, the House Republican whip, on July 8 introduced a resolution demanding that the Defense Department better enable U.S. military personnel overseas to vote in the November elections.
That act was followed by silence. Democrats normally leap on an opportunity to find fault with the Bush Pentagon. But not a single Democrat joined Blunt as a co-sponsor, and an all-Republican proposal cannot pass in the Democratic-controlled House.

It appears that Democrats do not want military personnel to vote. This is odd, because Democrats are the first to yell "Disenfranchised Voters". Gosh, this should be a campaign issue, But, Sen McCain will not take advantage of this campaign issue, because his strategy for a run at the White House has been poorly defined.

The Great Treasure Hunt...

Nathan's a marketers dream come true. He memorizes commercials and then recites them over dinner like a mini little announcer. It'd be a good job for him if he doesn't turn out to be one of those weird cat people, though he's showing all the signs, three cat books from the library in one week, calendars, posters, at day camp he was asked to write down the things he treasured most..my family, my cat and the vet, at least we came first. The next day, asked to make his most priceless possession out of clay, he, of course, made his cat, which only gets to walk on her own legs when he's out of the house.

Anyway, he started reciting a commercial for a metal detector and asked me if we could get one so that we could get rich like the guy on TV and then he could get more cats. I said I'd look into it, anything to get him out of the house. Cough, cough! Even on Craigslist they run a hundred bucks. He'll just have to go out in the yard and dig holes without one. I'll tell him I buried a dollar..that'll keep him out there for hours.

We had a metal detector once. Well, it was in transition from my parents house to my sisters house and at the time we had it at ours. We have an old house with a nice sized yard so we took it out to look around, people used to bury their valuables way back then and nobody even thought it was crazy. We found a lot of nails and stuff from when they built the garage, some bolts and other junk. Then we hit pay dirt..

It was large, about five feet or so long and three feet wide. BEEP, BEEP, BEEP. What could it be? Buried treasure? Wouldn't that be great. We'd just bought the house and didn't even have furniture yet..buried treasure would come in really handy. We got out the shovels and started digging. What if it was a body! A murder scene in our own back yard..that would be exciting. We dug some more. Yes, it was definitely crypt sized. Whew...this thing was deep. What do you do if it is a body? Call the cops? I hoped we weren't suspects...more digging and a break for iced tea. The suspense was killing me. The neighbor came out and asked what the hell we were doing. I told her digging for buried treasure then regretted my words. I didn't know her very well then. What if it was a body and she was the one that put it there? That could mean that possibly we were next. Worse yet, what if it was buried treasure..would she want a cut? She looked at me like maybe we were buring a body, though, so I relaxed.

More digging, late into the evening. Finally, we hit something solid. Was it a body? A chest full of buried treasure? Nope..it was an old septic tank buried 75 feet from the house. The old guy across the street came over the next day when we were filling in the hole and had a good laugh. Who knew they put septic tanks that far out from the house, I always figured they just went from out house to public sewer. We didn't open it up to see if there was buried treasure or a body inside..I didn't want to know that bad.

We didn't use the metal detector again either, the let down was just too much.

UK pop star enjoys new life as hit songwriter

NEW YORK (Billboard) - UK Singer/songwriter Cathy Dennis stormed America at the beginning of the...

So, I caught the news about how 90s dance diva/pop singer, Cathy Dennis, is still making a living in the music business - not as a performer, but as a music writer. She's responsible for huge hits for Kylie Minogue, Britney Spears, S Club Juniors, and Janet Jackson, just to name a few. I'm happy to see her doing so well!

Anyway, this news caused me to flashback of my high school youth. I had seen her beautiful 60s haircut and neon green album cover and fell in love with her. I got her debut album, Move to This through my primary way of purchasing semi-cheap CDs: BMG Music Club (which I'm still currently a member).

I think at the time, she had "Just Another Dream" as a hit single, a dancey number with that catchy line "is it for real or is it just another dream (just a dream)", followed by "Touch Me (All Night Long)" which shows off her dancing skills on MTV.

Cathy Dennis - Too Many Walls

Once I had the album, I was drawn to her sweet lullaby love song, "Too Many Walls". This song, complete with the violin parts, did really well on the Billboard charts.... and I believe it was the last time we heard from her in the States.

I don't know what happened really, she disappeared as quickly as she appeared on pop radio.

Looking at her discography, I can tell you that she did release two other albums, and a greatest hits, but as far as I know, they were only a blimp on the radar in the US. I'm sure she fared far better in her home country.

As luck would have it, Discopop reported a brand new Cathy Dennis album called Sexcassettes should be out in 2008:

Her manager, Spice Girls svengali Simon Fuller, adds that the album has “a real contemporary guitar feeling” - which is less encouraging.

I don't know about 'less encouraging', but it should be interesting to hear her new original songs.

Dennis, from the recent Yahoo article, adds more details:

Actually, yes. I've been working for the last year-and-a-half with a band I put together called Sexcassettes. We're shooting a video for the first single, "Killer Love," this month, and I hope to have it out by the end of the year. It's more of a band sound than produced pop. As usual, I have no idea what to expect.
